Herm Arrow Prior to March 1986, I was known as the "bionic grandfather," who would live to be one hundred and twenty-five. Wanting to study the cello at an early age, I found my priorities ahead of music encompassing sports and politics, which absorbed all of my spare time. Marriage, a child (now age fifty-five), four grandchildren and more marriages all followed pell-mell as time passed. Suddenly, at age sixty-six, lo and behold, a quadruple bypass! What have we here? The process of rebuilding my traumatized body involve a step-by-step regimen of walking that eventually evolved into race walking, the healthiest of all aerobic sports. I also felt it vital to lend support to other patients and organized the Marin County, California, chapter of Mended Hearts for that purpose. At the grand age of seventy-two, I became interested in competitive race walking and joined the Marin Racewalkers. I have acquired a collection of gold, silver, and bronze medals in the seventy to seventy-four categories, as well as in the seventy-five to seventy-nine. Now at the age of seventy seven, I have become known as the "bionic great grandfather." |
